This little gal showed up at our house a few weeks ago. John and McKayla were sitting outside and she just came trotting up the sidewalk like she belonged here. He said he tried shooing her away and I'm picturing him smacking his hands together trying to scare her away, when in fact, what he did was a very half-heartily 'no, go away'. When she started to leave tho, he called her back :-D
I was at an Event Committee meeting for a local rescue when she showed up and not knowing what to do with her, John put her in the outdoor kennel with some food and water. He sent me pictures of her, saying it looked like she had a mange and that he didn't know what to do with her. When I got home, I went to visit her. She immediately started wagging her butt (not just her tail, her whole rear end wiggles LOL) and licking my fingers. Having never dealt with either form of mange and not knowing which she had, I didn't want to chance our 2 dogs getting it, so she stayed in the kennel and we showered after playing with her.
On Monday, we took her to the vet and had her checked out. Luckily, she just had demodetic mange and was started on Ivermectin and antibiotics. She also had a yeast infection in her ears and we were given a different antibiotic for that. She was tested for Heartworms and it came back negative! She was also scanned for a microchip, but nothing was found. They figure she's around a year or year and half old.
We weren't exactly sure how welcoming Katie would be as she's generally not the friendliest with older dogs but was hoping that the puppy was 'puppy enough' that she'd tolerate her. It worked out fine, Katie pretty much ignored her and Rio was never a problem. They've all been getting along great, except for a few spats over toys, but nothing major or life-threatening.
She still has a lot of puppy in her, or maybe it's her personality, but my gosh does she chew! This gal has to be watched 24/7 to make sure she's not chewing something up. Anything she can grab, she's grabbing. She's chewed holes in my couch pillows and even my couch cushions. I swear I can turn my back for half a second and when I turn back she's destroying something. Dog toys don't stand a chance with her, she's shredding them in 10 secs. She only has 2 settings: chew, chew, chew or passed out cold LOL
We're still looking for her home but not holding out much hope in finding it. Our neighborhood is on a dead end street and is a known drop-off for unwanted dogs (how DO people do that??!!), so that's probably where she came from. She'll stay here at least until the mange is cleared up and she is spayed and then we'll work on finding her a great forever home.
She still needs a name though. Suggestions?
